Thank you to our Churches

We would like to say THANK YOU to:

Pastor Busker, his staff and the members at Ponds Church  for Wednesday, October 31st

Father Lipnicki, his staff and the member of OLPH for Thursday, November 1st

Pastor Herb Dorfman Associate Pastor Russell Stammer and the members of Ramapo Valley Baptist Church for Friday November 2nd and Saturday November 3rd

Pastor Julie Haspel, her staff and the member of Messiah Lutheran Church for Saturday, November 3rd

We are so very fortunate to have a such wonderfully supportive religious community here in Oakland.  Our church leaders who had power answered our call at OaklandNJFlood.com and immediately open their doors to our community.  They served as charging stations, warming sites, wifi hotspots and provided a nice place to relax with a hot cup of coffee or use the kitchen to prepare a meal.  In some cases, it was the warm fire or the chance to share our struggles with another person experiencing the same challenges or the comforting pot of soup cooked by a caring church member, but in all cases and all four days it was a chance to warm the heart and the spirit in the chill of this crisis.  Thank you to our churches for their welcoming nature.

How Can You Help?

For those of us who are comfortable with a stocked fridge, power and nothing to do but surf the net and catch up on Modern Family,  we are taking a survey of the resources that we have in our own community.  Many of us have generators and stock piles of gasoline to spare.  We have laundry machines and a working stove.  These are types of things our residents without power do not have and may not have for a while.

If you would like to help those without power, please fill out this Volunteer Form.

The President of the Bergen County Volunteer Center, Janet Sharma, had some suggestions as well saying “…we are still in the emergency phase and not yet into recovery when decisions about needed resources or volunteer assistance will be determined.  We are getting lots of calls from people who want to help, but it is still too early.  We are telling them to help in their own neighborhoods: help neighbors with cleanup, run errands for the elderly and infirm, offer to take phones to various locations (city halls, malls) to charge them, help entertain neighbors’ children (if they already know them).  But don’t venture out to affected areas, and DO NOT start to collect anything.  Instead of collecting stuff, have them give money to the Red Cross, Salvation Army, food banks, or other reputable agencies of their choice.”

Orange and Rockland Advisory

O&R: Complete Service Restoration Could Take Weeks; Majority of 200,000 Affected Should be Restored

October 30, 2012

PEARL RIVER, NY Oct. 30, 2012 8 a.m. — O&R expects that a majority of its 200,000 customers whose service was knocked out by Hurricane Sandy should have their electricity back on within 10 days, but complete repairs to the devastating hurricane damage, and resulting total service restoration, could take weeks.

These projections are very preliminary and will be adjusted as the full extent of the damage is determined.

Because of the widespread damage the hurricane has caused to O&R’s electric transmission and distribution system — including17 transmission circuits down, 12 substations off line and 100 circuits locked out — O&R will have to rebuild much of those systems.

As the severe weather conditions subside, O&R will begin a systematic inspection, damage assessment, reconstruction and restoration process. This massive effort is expected to take weeks to complete.

O&R crews had restored service yesterday to about 4,000 electric customers before O&R suspended electric field work because the violent weather made it impossible for crews to work safely. O&R returned those crews to the field at midnight when the winds subsided and safely conditions improved.

O&R has mobilized and deployed all available company and contractor crews to repair storm damage and restore service. About 1,000 O&R employees were joined by about 800 contractor field workers Monday. More crews are expected to arrive through the week.

O&R offers these safety tips:

  • For safety’s sake, don’t touch or approach any downed wire. Assume it is energized and dangerous. Call O&R immediately toll-free 1-877-434-4100. Depending on the situation, you may also want to call your local police to divert traffic until an O&R crew arrives.
  • Maintain a distance of at least 50 feet from downed wires and anything they are in contact with including puddles of water and fences. Supervise your children so that they are not in the vicinity and keep pets on a leash.
  • If you experience a power outage, don’t assume that O&R automatically knows about it or that someone else will report it. To be sure the outage is reported, please call O&R toll-free at 1-877-434-4100 to let O&R know what happened. The more information you can provide, the more O&R can help you.

For more information, visit O&R’s Storm Information Center.

Stay Put While Town Assesses Hazzards

For those of you who did not receive the Reverse-911 call from the Mayor – The Message is STAY PUT WHILE THE TOWN ASSESSES ALL THE HAZARDS.

There are several trees and power lines down throughout the town, making many roads impassable and dangerous.  There are many crews around the town working to clear the roads.  Let the town assess and respond before we try to resume any regular daily activities so that we do not delay assistance to those most in need.

There is a major tree down with live wires in the Truman Blvd. area which is the immediate concern and area of response today.  Also there is a Welfare Check by the Borough today throughout the town assessing all other areas of concern and needs of the residents.

All non-emergency calls should be made to 201-337-6171.  Borough Hall will be opening at 1pm.
